Split Excel into Multiple Files by Column

Choose a workbook, pick the column to split on, and download one .xlsx file for each distinct value: one per region, customer, salesperson or month. Several files come as one .zip.

How to split an Excel file into separate files

Choose an .xlsx file. If it has several worksheets, pick the one to split.
Check the header row. It is detected automatically, even when the sheet starts with a title line.
Pick the column whose values decide which file each row goes to.
Click Split into files. You get one file per value, named after that value (for example North.xlsx, South.xlsx). Several files arrive as a single .zip download; if the column has only one value, that .xlsx downloads directly. Rows with an empty value go to (blank).xlsx.

What is kept, and what is not

Kept: every row and column, values exactly as stored (including dates, times, text with leading zeros, hyperlinks and rich text), cell formatting (number formats, fonts, fills, borders, alignment), row heights, column widths, hidden columns, and merged cells that sit within one row (such as a heading spanning two columns). Each output gets a frozen header row and filter buttons.

Converted: formulas become the values they last calculated, because after splitting the rows they point to are no longer in the same place. Some programs and scripts save formulas without ever calculating them; if the sheet contains formulas with no saved value, the tool stops and tells you which cells, rather than guess. Open the file in Excel, LibreOffice or Google Sheets, save it, and try again.

Not copied: charts, images, pivot tables, comments, conditional formatting, data validation, merged cells that span several rows, and macros (.xlsm files are accepted, but the outputs are plain .xlsx files without VBA). Rows above the header row (titles, notes) are left out of the outputs, and completely empty rows are skipped; the status line says how many.

Grouping: rows are grouped by the value as it is displayed, so the number 1 and the text 1 end up together, while capitalisation and spaces count (East and east are separate groups). Empty cells form their own (blank) group; a cell that literally reads “(blank)” gets a separate output named (blank) (2).

Is my spreadsheet uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and split by your browser on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can I split an .xls or .csv file?

This tool reads .xlsx (and .xlsm) workbooks. Save older .xls files as .xlsx first. For CSV files use the CSV splitter.

Can I get the groups as tabs instead of separate files?

Yes: use Split into multiple worksheets to get a single workbook with one tab per value.

How big a file can it handle?

It depends on your device's memory. Files with tens of thousands of rows split in seconds on a typical laptop.
