Split a CSV file by column

Choose a CSV, pick a column, and download one file per distinct value, as CSV or Excel. Several files come as a single .zip; a single file downloads directly.

Private by design: your file is opened and processed on this device. It is never uploaded to us or anyone else.

How it works

  1. Choose a CSV file. Commas, semicolons, tabs and pipes are detected automatically, and quoted fields with commas or line breaks are handled.
  2. Pick the column to split on.
  3. Choose CSV or Excel output and click Split. You get a file per value (for example East.csv), in one .zip when there is more than one. Rows with an empty value go to (blank); a value that literally reads “(blank)” gets its own file, (blank) (2).

Your data stays exactly as written

Values are copied as text, so ZIP codes like 02134, account numbers and amounts like 2.0 are not reformatted. CSV outputs keep the original delimiter and include a UTF-8 byte-order mark, so Excel opens accented characters correctly. In Excel output, plain numbers become numbers and anything with leading zeros stays text.

Encodings, empty lines and broken quotes

UTF-8, UTF-16 and Windows-1252 files (what Excel on Windows saves as “CSV (Comma delimited)”) are all read correctly; outputs are always UTF-8. Empty lines and data lines that contain only delimiters, such as ,,,, are skipped, and the status line says how many. The first line is always the header: if it has no column names, it stays the header and the columns are labelled Column A, Column B and so on. If a quoted field is never closed, the tool stops and tells you which record, instead of guessing where it ends. Workbooks and other binary files are refused rather than split into junk.

Questions

Is my file uploaded?

No. The CSV is read and split by your browser on your device.

Can I split Excel files?

Yes: use Split Excel into multiple files or into multiple worksheets.
